TII (Technology Innovation Institute) asked us to bring in the power of graffiti and visual arts to enhance the experience inside DERC (Directed Energy Research Centre).

They gave us six walls to create a unique visual experience inside a very scientific space that seeks to embrace innovation. Specifically, the lab director requested to create something unique to encourage creative thinking as much as analytical, something to make the lab feel like there’s more space beyond the white walls.

6 unique Op Art murals find their home inside a highly secure and pristine scientific lab – an unexpected stage for art – where researchers study the behaviour of electromagnetic and sound waves and now enjoy 280 sqm of handpainted abstract art.

The Directed Energy Research Centre (DERC) is a Technology Innovation Institute highly secure and clean facility. Their main objective is to develop new applications for the real world through innovation in the areas of electromagnetic and sound waves. They wanted to make the lab more interesting by introducing visuals in the common areas. However, they didn’t want those branded vinyl stickers.

Fully embracing their ethos of innovation, the client requested to paint the walls to create something unexpectedly human – as opposed to something scientific – to disrupt the community inside the lab. In line with this premise, we took it even further and proposed to create abstract Art inspired by the scientists' daily activities. All 280 m2 of hand-painted abstract art uses patterns, optical illusions, shapes, forms, colours, rhythm, and lines to illustrate electromagnetic and acoustic waves, radiation, lasers, and frequencies.

• Six (6) murals in total were painted
• 280 m2 of abstract art
• Inspired 40+ high-profile scientists daily
• Increased a sense of belonging by making the lab uniquely distinctive
• Building brand equity through the use of brand colours and artistic expression
• Created an emotional bond with the place
• Captivate the visitors’ curiosity online and offline
